SES President’s Address

Dear Friends,

Thank you for supporting the SES over the years.

One of the primary objectives of the SES since its inception is the provision of an avenue where members of our Endodontic fraternity can meet and discuss cases and updates in our field, either through Meetings, Journal Clubs, Forums and the like. The SES has evolved somewhat over the years but this primary objective has not changed.

I am glad to report that we have had a healthy dose of Continuing Education Sessions over the past 2 years. This will continue. The mainstay of our CDE series will be the regular Journal Club sessions. We will also continue to organize the occasional larger scale Meetings with foreign speakers, together with collaborations with external commercial agencies, as well as the yearly CPR courses. The upcoming SES-MES Meeting in 2012 will be held in Singapore and we hope that you will continue to give your support in making this Meeting a success, in every sense of the word.

Looking forward, we would also like to foster, through activities and the like, a greater level of association among the members with our Society. SES is a very small fraternity with well less than 50 members. Support for the Society is usually most appropriately represented by attendance or voluntary contributions at Journal Clubs, Meetings (BGMs included) and voluntary involvement in the Executive Committee and it is the levels of participation on all fronts that are on occasions a little wanting. It is a chicken-and-egg scenario and the issue quite likely lies with the fact that the SES should perhaps be a little more active and more in the forefront in its activities that it carries out. But willing participants and volunteers in our Society are needed in order for that to be accomplished. We have tried in some measure in the past, like organizing the Endodontists’ only Lecture and Workshop Session with VDW where invitations had been personally delivered to encourage maximum participation. The session was organized with a deeper objective of promoting camaraderie if not for anything else. Car decals were also made and distributed to identify us as being in a distinct group of practitioners and Tokens of appreciation were presented to the past presidents of the Society in acknowledgement of their contributions to the SES. A couple of other plans were shelved indefinitely as support was somewhat left wanting. It has been a challenge in the past to get members together and it will continue to always be a challenge but it is work-in-progress and I hope that in the upcoming SES-MES Meeting which requires a huge amount of organizational effort, that members can volunteer their time to make it a truly enjoyable effort for everyone.

Our website ( www.endodontics.org.sg ) has been in existence for several years now and members are encouraged to refer to it for activities’ updates. A special belated Thank You must be given to Dr Lim Kian Chong who single-handedly saw through the birth of our website and continues to nurture it today.

We would also like for members of the SES to have greater local, regional and perhaps even international exposure. Encouraging members to travel overseas for International Meetings and establishing ties and cementing professional relationships can help achieve this in the long term. The best way for the SES to move forward is to learn from the more established Endodontic Societies overseas and implement or modify these lessons locally. It is with this in mind that we are proposing monetary grants for members and associate members for overseas Meetings. But all things considered, human capital again remains the most critical factor to ensure progress and it is only with continued voluntary contributions and maximum participation from our members in time, effort and attendance, that we can make any headway in building a stronger SES with a sense of togetherness among members.

Thank you once again for supporting and being part of the SES and we wish you a very fruitful year ahead.

Poh Yu-Jin
