What is Endodontics?

The word endodontics comes from two Greek words - "endo", which means inside and "odons" which means tooth. It refers collectively to the study and management of the inner part of the tooth known as the dental pulp, which consists of blood vessels and nerves. Infections of the dental pulp can result in a painful toothache.

Endodontics is a specialty within dentistry that aims to treat or prevent pulpal infections with the goal of preserving the natural tooth of a patient.

Some of the procedures used in endodontics to achieve this include:

  • Root canal treatment

  • Vital pulp therapy

  • Surgical endodontics

  • Core or post and core restorations following root canal treatment

  • Bleaching of root-filled teeth

  • Management of dental trauma

  • Management of cracked teeth
